GSU Familiar Faces Chevre, Washington Claim Women's Basketball Weekly Accord Again
CHICAGO --- A pair of Governors State University familiar faces have claimed the latest round of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the seven-day period ending Dec. 29. Senior forward Zareia Chevre (St. Paul, Minn.) collected her second straight offensive award, while Da'Naria Washington (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned the nod defensively for the third time this season when the league office made the announcement on Tuesday morning.
Chevre averaged 21.0 points on 56.7 percent shooting from the field (17-of-30) in a split decision last week. She also averaged 4.5 rebounds over the two contests.
An all-tournament selection at Governors State's Holiday Classic, Chevre opened the tournament with a 27-point, seven-rebound effort in an 83-75 victory over Cornerstone University (Mich.) on Saturday. In that game, she hit on 11 of her 17 shots from the field for a 64.7 percent mark.
Chevre added another 15 points with two boards on Sunday in a 62-52 setback to 15-0 Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.).
Washington, meanwhile, authored five blocks and ten boards on the defensive end and 15 points and seven assists on offense over the two outings. She just missed on a double-double Saturday against Cornerstone, where she totaled 11 points and nine rebounds to go along with six assists and two blocks.
On Sunday, Washington recorded three blocks, four points, four rebounds, and one assist.
The 1-1 split on the week put the Jaguars at 11-3 overall. In league play, they hold a half-game lead atop the conference standings at 5-1.
Other Offensive Nominees: Ryann Ogarek (Saint Xavier).
Other Defensive Nominees: Eleanor Harris (Saint Xavier).
