GovState women's basketball (now 10-2, 5-1 CCAC) continues to earn conference awards with Zareia Chevre, "Z" was named Offensive Player of the Week for her two big scoring games last week for the Jaguars.
After the holiday break, GSU is back in action Saturday - Sunday, December 28-29 hosting the 2024 Winter Classic Tournament in the ARC.
Governors State University next plays 4 PM Saturday vs. Cornerstone University (MIchigan).

GSU's Chevre, SXU's Harris Collect Women's Basketball Weekly Gifts
CHICAGO --- Leading their respective teams to a pair of wins during the seven-day period ending Dec. 22, Governors State University's Zareia Chevre (St. Paul, Minn.) and Saint Xavier University's Eleanor Harris (Downers Grove, Ill.) have each garnered Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week commendations, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Chevre was named the CCAC Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 26.5 points per game and shooting 75 percent from the field (18-of-24). She also converted 15-of-20 free-throw attempts for an identical 75 percent mark. Among Chevre's other numbers in the two games were seven steals, seven rebounds, four assists and one block.
The senior forward's performance on Saturday was key to the Jaguars' snapping Indiana University South Bend's 33-game home winning streak with her pouring in 30 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field (84.6 pct.) in the 82-66 victory. She also registered four steals, two rebounds, one block and one assist in the road win.
In another conference game on Wednesday, Chevre totaled 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in an 82-45 decision over Trinity Christian College. In that affair, she also had a hot hand, making seven of her 11 field-goal attempts and eight of her ten free throws.
Governors State maintained its top spot in the league standings by extending its winning streak to four games. The Jaguars are 10-2 overall and 5-1 against CCAC opponents.
Harris gained CCAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades after averaging 5.5 defensive rebounds (9.5 overall), 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals in her two games. She also produced one double-double.
The latter feat came in Saint Xavier's 88-55 win over University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (Mo.) last Wednesday, where she totaled 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 13 rebounds, four blocks, two steals and one assist.
The junior center collected another 14 points, six rebounds, two blocks, two steals and one assist in the Cougars' edging out of Indiana University Northwest 64-63 on Saturday.
Winners of five games in a row, Saint Xavier is 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the CCAC.
