MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS OPEN 2023 SEASON AT FRIDAY MEET, Channahon Park, IL - Both Teams Finish Third Place of 10 & 11 Teams In Strong Showing To Open Running Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL - Governors State University men's and women's cross country teams open the 2023 season running in the Chanhannon Park Invitational, 6 p.m. outside Joliet.

GSU Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach John Niendorf commented on his teams preparation for the season opener.  "The women have had a really strong camp and first few weeks thus far. As a coach, I can tell that many of them put in the mileage over the summer. They have looked strong during their workouts, and I can already see a lot of progress in their aerobic fitness. I am excited to watch them race this Friday."

"There are a lot of strong teams at this first meet and it'll be a good test for us going into the rest of the season. The girl's side is young, but I have high expectations for them this season. I believe they can finish right in the top half of the conference this season. The future is bright on the girl's side for sure. If we can stay healthy, we should have a great squad for years to come," said Coach Niendorf about his women's team.

Coach Niendorf talked about the GSU men's team. "The men had an excellent Summers worth of training this season and they came into the year already in great shape. Their tempo runs have looked phenomenal and they're going to come into this first meet already in good shape. We have a lot of JUCO transfers and freshmen on this team, and I think it has been a nice mix of young and older runners."

"The older guys have been great leaders to the younger runners for the men's team. I hope to see some runners break 16 this upcoming 5k and see alot in the 16s. I think this mix of guys can finish the season strong at conference and pit up some solid times throughout the course of the season," said Coach Niendorf.
