AQUINAS COLLEGE BEATS GSU 87-61 IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Governors State University jumped out to early leads in the first half against Aquinas College before the Saints turned the tables in the final ten minutes of the half to take a commanding 40-24 lead at the break.
GSU's Williams Bates and Adam Taylor led the early scoring with the Jaguars and Saints changing leads three times in the opening 10 minutes. The Jaguars led 22-16 with 10:16 remaining before Aquinas (6-7) went on a 24-2 scoring run to take control of the game.
Taylor scored seven first half points and Bates scored five to lead GSU in the first twenty minutes. After the fast start, GSU shot only 35.7% in the first half (10-28 field goals) and were 2-11 from three point range.
Aquinas dominated the inside and scored 32 of its 40 first half points in the paint led by Menalito McGee's seven points and four boards.
The Jaguars shot a red-hot 68.2% in the second half (15-22) but could get no closer than 14 points against the Saints who also shot lights out in the half shooting (16-28), 57.1%. Aquinas broke open the game in the second half hitting 7-12 three-pointers (58.3%).
Governors State (4-12) had two players score in double figures with Taylor leading the way with 12 points and Kyle Jackson scored 10 in 23 minutes off the bench.
Four GSU players scored seven points each: Bates, Nick Mikash, Tai Walters-Whitaker and Tyler Clarke. Clarke also contributed five rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Jaguars next play January 4 returning to CCAC conference play at Saint Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa, 7:30 CST start.
