Weekly Men's Soccer Distinction Goes To GSU's Croce, VU's Ascenzo
CHICAGO --- A hat trick by Governors State University's Andrea Croce (Rome, Italy) and a ten-save effort from Viterbo University's Ernesto Ascenzo (Lima, Peru) during the seven-day period ending Oct. 20 have earned the pair Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, the league office announced on Tuesday morning.
Croce garnered the offensive recognition for the second time in three weeks after authoring his second three-goal match of the season in a 10-0 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday. With those numbers this past weekend, the sophomore forward now ranks first in the league in both goals scored (12) and total points (27).
Governors State also tied Viterbo University earlier in the week to keep its unbeaten streak intact at nine games (7-0-2). The Jaguars are tied for first place in the league standings with their 5-0-2 record against CCAC foes. Overall, they are 9-2-4.
Ascenzo, meanwhile, permitted just one goal over his two matches played in the net. The senior recorded four saves in the 1-1 tie with Governors State last Wednesday. He then went on to register his fourth shutout of the season on Saturday when he stopped six shots in a 1-0 win over Indiana University Northwest.
Viterbo is 3-4-4 overall and 2-1-4 versus league competition.
Other Offensive Nominees: Guilherme Correia (Trinity Christian), Gabriel Uno (Judson), Cesar Lopez (Indiana Northwest), Nicolas Lopez (Viterbo).
Other Defensive Nominees: Alexander Judd (Governors State), Giorgos Christodoulou (Trinity Christian), Devun Collins (Indiana Northwest), Ivan Dominguez (Judson), Sebastian Grimm (Holy Cross), Samuel Sullivan (Calumet St. Joseph).
