Bio

Fred Hawkins is in his fourth season as head coach golf coach at Governors State University. He began his duties on March 8, 2021 after previously serving as an assistant coach with the Jaguars.

During the 2021-22 campaign Hawkins worked closely with Sedona Smith, who set school records for lowest scoring average in a season (93.3) and career (95.4). She also set a new scoring standard for 36-holes (174) and achieved GSU's highest individual finish ever (21st) at the CCAC Championships.

In 2021 Hawkins was named interim head coach prior to the start of the season. Under his tutelage, rookie Sedona Smith finished with the third-lowest scoring average in school history and recorded GSU's highest individual finish ever at the conference tournament. Teammate Macie Jansen also shot a career-low round during the CCAC Championships.

During the 2019-20 season, Hawkins served as an assistant coach at GSU, helping develop two rookies in Macie Jansen and Savanah Julian as the Jaguars finished with a 128.0 scoring average.

Hawkins previously served as executive director of The First Tee of Joliet, a national youth development program that builds character through golf.

A North Chicago native, Hawkins has extensive coaching experience in basketball, coaching the AAU Joliet Hawks for 16 years and the Joliet Central High School girls junior varsity team for the past two seasons.

An avid golfer who plays in amateur circuits, Hawkins earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Aurora University (1974). He resides in Crest Hill.
