Bio
Fred Hawkins is in his fifth year as head coach golf coach for Governors State University in 2023-24. He began his head coaching duties on March 8, 2021 after serving a season as assistant coach.
In 2021-2022, Hawkins guided GSU to the team championship at the season-opening Troll Classic. Under Hawkin's guidance, Pat Guilfoyle won the individual title at the Troll Classic and Anthony Accettura became just the second Jaguar to shoot sub-70 with a 68 at the St. Francis Fall Classic.
In 2021 Hawkins was named interim head coach prior to the start of the season. He guided GSU to a sixth-place finish at the CCAC Championships and had two golfers—Casey Domke and Patrick Guilfoyle—named to the All-CCAC First Team. Domke captured the CCAC Championship and competed at NAIA Nationals.
In 2019-20 Hawkins worked as an assistant coach, helping a young squad consisting of four rookies that managed to record four Top-5 finishes in a shortened season. The Jaguars also compiled an 82.7 scoring average.
Hawkins previously served as executive director of The First Tee of Joliet, a national youth development program that builds character through golf.
A North Chicago native, Hawkins has extensive coaching experience in basketball, coaching the AAU Joliet Hawks for 16 years and the Joliet Central High School girls junior varsity team for two seasons earlier in the 2020s.
An avid golfer who plays in amateur circuits, Hawkins earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Aurora University (1974). He resides in Crest Hill.
